Modi to begin poll campaign from Silchar
GUWAHATI:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to begin the campaign for the 2019 Lok
Sabha election in Assam from Silchar in Barak Valley on Friday, a Bharatiya
Janata Party spokesperson said.The rally is part of the first phase of the
election campaign by Modi, the spokesperson said Thursday. This would be his
second visit to Assam in a span of just 10 days. The prime minister had
inaugurated the country's longest rail-cumroad bridge, Bogibeel bridge, on Christmas.
During his
day-long visit to the Northeast. Modi will first visit Manipur, where he will inaugurate
and lay foundation stone
of various projects at a
rally. Then, he is scheduled to address a rally at Kalinagar in Silchar area,
BJP state President Ranjeet Dasssaid.

ahead of PM's visit on Friday, security has been stepped up in Barak

Security beefed up in Cachar ahead of PM’s visit.

Security has been stepped up in south Assam’s Barak Valley, especially Cachar
district, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on Friday. Modi, who
will be visiting Barak Valley for the second time after becoming the Prime Minister, will address a
gathering at Ramnagar in Cachar district, around 4km
from here.Cachar
superintendent of police Rakesh Roushan told The Telegraph over phone on Thursday
that elaborate security arrangements had been done to prevent any untoward incident. Adequate forceshave
been deployed so that the mega event is conducted without any hassle, he said.
“Forces have
been pressed into service at different places. Everything is in order and we are completely prepared for the mega
event.” he said. He also
urged the masses (attendees) to cooperate with security officials to help in smooth conduct of the
programme. Meanwhile, the town has apparently been given a makeover with roads to
the event venue being cleaned and BJP flags, posters and hoardings being placed
at different places of the town. Preparations at the venue have almost been
completed on Thursday. Different entry points have been arranged tostreamline
the crowd in a hassle-free manner.
Assam excise
and fisheries
minister Parimal Suklabaidya, the only minister from Barak Valley, said on Thursday afternoon that the preparations,
which were going on for
the past few days, would
be completed by this evening. "Ninety percent of
the
preparations have been completed. The rest will be wrapped up by the
evening," he said.
"Around
3 lakh people are expected at the event. All arrangements are being done to conduct the programme in a smooth
manner." he added.
Sonai
legislator Aminul Haque Laskar said it would be a historic day in the valley as
the man himself (Modi), who has taken the country to great heights with his
dynamic
leadership, would be here. Arrangements for the event have almost been completed. he said.

Silchar bodies opposing bill plan hunger strike.

Several organisations including the Assam
Indigenous
People’s Protection Committee. Manipuri Youths Front Assam and Krishak Mukti Sangram
Samiti among others will stage a hunger-strike at Madhurapul, Rongpur here on Friday
opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. 2016 a The general secretary of Assam
Indigenous People’s Protection Committee, Seram Herajit Singh said. “The bill,
if passed, will jeopardise the existence of indigenous communities in Assam and that can never be accepted.”
The hunger-strike.which will be from 10am to 4pm. is being supported by many other
organisations including Muslim Development Council. Assam Manipuri Muslim Youths’
Front. Indigenous Students’ and Youths’ Forum and Namasudra Parishad. he
informed. He asked what would be the use of the National Register of Citizens(NRC)
if the bill was passed. "Why is the NRC update process being conducted then?”
he questioned.Sharing his reaction. Basudeb Sharma. President of All Assam Bengali
Hindu Association, said. “Some organisations had been opposing the bill but
these would not be effective at all.”
