The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
in Assam continued its
domination at the Panchayat level as
it emerd as the topper.with
Congress In the second spot while
Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and
AIUDF färing poorly after the
counting of votes entered the
third day on Friday with complete
results yet to be out.
‘Complete results
were out in respect to 28
districts so far while votes counting
were still on in Cachar, Dhubri
and some other districts,”
said Harendra Nath Borah, Assam’s
State Election
Commissioner,
Results for 17,677
seats out of 21,990 seats for
Gaon Panchayat Ward Member were
declared where BJP won 7,540,
followed by Congress with
5,896, AGP 1,372, Independents
2.028. AIUDF 755, TMC with
2, BPF
47 and others with
37. Results for 1881
seats out of 2199 seats for Gaon
Panchayat President were
declared where BJP bagged 867,
Congress 645, AGI 110. AIUDF 106, Independent 150 and
others got 3.
Results for 1860
seats out of 2,199 seats for
Anchalik Panchayat Member
were also
declared where BJP
got 883 followed by Congress
with & 15 seats, AGP
96, AIUDF 111,
Independent 124 and
others with 1.
Lastly, results for
347 posts out of 420 seats for
Zila Parishad Member post were out
where
BJP won 181,
Congress 1, AGP 15, AIUDF 15 and
Independent 14. “Re-polling was
ordered in
97 Panchayats and It
was completed in 95 while the
remaining two would go for re-polling
on Saturday in
Gohpur and Hailakandi,” added
Bora.

between two groups over building a tower for a local deity’s temple in

district unleashed a
macabre tale of death, killing 12 devotees by poisoning the temple ‘prasada’.
On Friday, over 10
devotees fell ill and were admitted to various hospitals in multiple locations
in both
Chamarajanagar and
Mysuru districts.
While the health
department officiaLs have confirmed the incident as a case of poisoning, it is
yet to be
established whether
the poison was actually mixed in the ‘prasada’ offered at the Kitchukattu
Maramma
temple in Sulvadi
village, Hanurtaluk.
What was initially
beLieved to have been a simple case of food poisoning, turned out to be
shocking
instance of sabotage
with the Chamarajanagar police detaining two villagers - Chennappa, a member of
the local village
gram panchayat, and Madesha - for allegedly poisoning the ‘prasada’ prepared at
the
temple to be
distributed among devotees. The poLice have sent samples to food labs for
further tests.

➜ Head-on collision leaves 3 dead, 4 injured
In a fatal road
mishap, three persons died and as many injured after a
night service passenger bus and a pickup van collided head-on, on
National highway (NH) 37 at Baniapara
under Dhupdhora
Police Station In Goalpara district in the wee hours of Friday.
According to police, the Assam State Transport
Corporation (ASTC) bus from Mankachar bound for Guwahati
collided head-on with the van at high speed. The driver of the
bus identified as Chandra Kanta Khanal (24) of Krlshnai and
a person travelling in the pickup van, .Jyotish Rabha (22)
of Mendipathar. died on the spot while
one passenger of the
bus. Saran Adhikary (25) of South Sikkim succumbed to his
injuries In a hospital. Four other passengers travelling in the bus suffered
severe injuries and were referred to Goalpara Civil Hospital for treatment.
➜ 3 poachers held with gun, ammo
(KNP) and Bokakhat
Police jointly launched an operation and apprehended three hardcore animal
poachers and recovered arms and ammunition at Bokakhat in Golaghat district on
Friday. Based on information, we intercepted a car suspected to be of the
poachers and apprehended a duo identified as Diganta Bora and Pranab Ravidas,”
said Rohini Saikia. Divisional Forest Officer (DFO),
Kaziranga. ‘One 3.3 rifle and sixteen live rounds of ammunition were recovered from
their possession. The duo then led our team to the third
poacher.’ added
Saikia. The poacher, identifled as Abidur Ali, was then picked up from a barber
shop at Latabari area near Kaziranga.
