1.CBI court
convicts four in Gauhati University scam
GUWAHATI: A
special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)Court has convicted and sentenced to
imprisonment four persons
in a 15-year-old case of financial misappropriation in Gauhati University (GU).
CBI Court
Special Judge Binod Kumar Chetri convicted the accused in a judgement passed on December 29, 2018, an
official source said here on Monday, The accused are Dipak Kalita, Anned Guard
in the Cash Section of AccountsDepartment of GU, Nagen Chandra Sarma, the
then-Chief Cashier of
GU, Kumud liarman. the
then-Chief Cashier of
GU, and Ramgopal Prasad, the then-Junior Cash Collector in the Cash Section of Accounts Department of GU.
Kumud Barman
and Nagen Sharma were sentencedto undergo rigorous
imprisonment for a
period of 5 years and
fine of Rs 5 lakhs, in default another imprisonment for one year for their offence.The same two accused are also
to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of five years and fine of Rs 5 lakhs,
in default another imprisonment for one year for each of their offence.
While
accused Dipak Kalita and Ram Gopal Prasad have been sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of five years and fine
of Rs 2 lakhs, in default, they would have to undergo imprisonment for one year
for their offences.
The
sentences are to run concurrently.The four persons have
been
convicted for criminal conspiracy to misappropriate cash amount of Rs 34,67,816.58 approximately of GU by
falsely showing credit of amount to the account of GU.
The CBI had
taken over the case from Assam Police in September, 2005, while the original
case was lodged in September. 2003.The CBI had filed the charge-sheet in
December, 2008.
2. United Oppn blocks triple talaq.
NEW DELHI: A
united Opposition on Monday thwarted the government’s attempt to push the instant Triple Talaq Bill in the Rajya
Sabha as it insisted on referring it to the select committee of Parliament Amid
uproar over the Bill. Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh
adjourned the House for the day. The Bill will now be tabled in die Upper House
of the Parliament on January 2,2019.
The Muslim
Women (Protection of Rights onMarriage) Bill 2018 was slated to be taken up by
the Rajya Sabha on Monday afternoon for consideration and passing. However, as soon as an effort was made to take
the Bill up, an uproar erupted in the House.TMC leader Derek O Brien said all
opposition patties unanimously want the Bill to be sent to a select committee for proper scrutiny. Echoing similar
sentiments,
leader of Opposition in Rajya
Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, said. "This is such an important Bill which can
positively or negatively
affect the lives of crores of people can’t be passed just like this without
going to a select committee."
As the House
was not in order, deputy chairman Harivansh adjourned the house for 15 minutes. But even
after the House reconvened,
uproar continued. Congress leader Anand Sharma said that a legislative scrutiny
was critical of the Bill before it could be taken up by the House.
Minister of
State for Parliamentary Affair Vijay Goel attacked the opposition for stalling the Bill,
saying they had no sympathy
for Muslim women.The Bill, which proposes to criminalize the practice of Muslim
men giving divorce to their wives by uttering ‘talaq’ thrice, was passed by Lok
Sabha three days ago. The Bill needs to be passed by the Rajya Sabha to become
a law.
3. Majuli teens out for picnic meet watery grave in Subansiri.
In a tragic
incident on the last day of the year, two teenagers drowned while swimming in
the Subansiri River at Cenimoraghat area in Lower Majuli along the bunks of
river Brahmaputra. According to local sources, a group of teenagers from the river island, descended at Cenimoraghat
area for picnic on Monday.
At around
2.30 pm. two boys identified as Gautam Dutta and Ranjan Kalita dived into the
river to take a swim.
“While
swimming, one of them got stuck and the other, in an attempt to pull his friend
out, drowned himself,” said
Nitu Lakota,
a local resident. “Ultimately, the duo could not withstand the current of the
river and drowned,” added lakota.The local further informed that Gautam Dutta hailed from Gormur Satra while
Ranjan Kalita from Borbarigaon in Majuli. "Both were 16-yearolds."

State
Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) personnel, who were pressed into rescue operations,
were successful in recovering the bodies of the two boys from the river. Meanwhile,
a pall of gloom descended on the island after the news of the drowning deaths spread.
4. Railways catering contracts go online.
In a major policy shift bidding for parking, catering
and parcel-leasing worth about Rs
3,000cr will lie awarded through an e-tendering process as the Railways has decided to do away with
paper-based tenders.
