1.GIRLS ABUSED IN DELHI SHELTER

NEW DELHI:
Girls of a shelter home in Delhi were allegedly abused by its staff, following which a
complaint was registered
by the police, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) said Friday. The DCW members
interacted with girls aged 6-15 to understand their horrific experience.
Four women
of a Delhi shelter home, where girls were allegedly abused by its staff, were
arrested on Saturday, The; Girls of a shelter home in Delhi were allegedly abused by its staff', following which
a complaint was registered by the police, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) said on Friday.During an
inspection of shelter homes in Delhi on Thursday, the DCW members interacted
with girls aged 6-15 to understand their experience of residing at a shelter
home, a DCW statement said. Some elder girls at a shelter home in Delhi’s
Dwarka area alleged that the female staff put chilli powder in their private parts
as punishment. They were also forced to have chilli powder, it said.Any sort of
defiant behaviour from the children would be met with “serious and grave punishment”
because of which they had become submissive, it said.
The teenage
girls were also forced to wash utensils and clothes, clean moms and toilets. and perform
other kitchen chores, as
the home did not have adequate staff, There was only one cook in the home for
the 22 girls and staff, and the quality of food was not good, the statement said.
The teenage
girls complained that they were beaten with scales for not keeping their rooms clean
and not listening to the staff. They were not permitted to go home during
summer and winter vacations, it said.The committee members shared the
allegations with DCW chief Swati Maliwal who immediately reached the home at
8.00 pm. Maliwal immediately called the Dwarka deputy commissioner of police, who
sent a team of senior
officers to the home and recorded statements of the children. A complaint
has been registered by
the Delhi Police against the staff, the DCW said.
The DCW
chairperson and the members of the expert committee stayed in the home till early morning, the statement said.A team of
DCW counsellors as well as police have been deputed in the home 24x7 to ensure
the safety of the children. The DCW shall continue to monitor the condition of
the shelter home, it added. Earlier, the DCW had set up a committee in
consultation with the Delhi government on shelter homes to inspect various private and
government-run
2. Baby dies
after mother chops off extra fingers
KRANOWA: A
Superstitous woman in a tribal hamlet in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district
allegedly chopped off the extra fingers and toes of her newborn child out of
fear that the oddity would hamper the infant’s chances of getting married. The
girl, who was born on December 22 with six
fingers each
on both hands and six toes each on both feet. The woman later coated the
injuries with cow dung. Within hours, the infant died and was buried in the
village.
After being
alerted by media reports, the body of the child was exhumed on Saturday for further
probe, an official said. Police said a post mortem was conducted and the
medical report was awaited following which action will be taken.
3.Railway to focus on doubling of tracks:

GUWAHATI:
Union Railway Minister, Piyush Goyal on Saturday maintained that the Railway
Ministry will soon approach the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs for
clearance of doubling of railway line from New Bongaigaon to Guwahati via Rangiya.He was addressing a review' meeting of senior railway officers
at N. F. Railway Headquarters
at Maligaon this evening. The minister also said that following the major
success of completing Bogibeel Bridge, all efforts should now be pointed towards doubling of
railway lines in the
region for capacity enhancement. He asked the officials to prepare a Plan of Action within one
The minister
also spoke to Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya for ensuring quick permission
for soil procurement permission which is presently hampering project
progress in Assam. He also directed for Vista dome coaches in Iumding Badarpur hill section and other tourist routes.The
minister was apprised that Tetelia - Byrnihat new
railway
line, doubling of Lumding - Hojai section, Agartala Sabroom new railway line
and international line
from Jogbani to Viratnagar
would be ready very soon. Goyal also said that the use of sound of Honey Bee for
chasing away elephants from railway track was an example of rural innovation that can bring
in real transformation.
N. F. Railway’s
Rangiya division had
successfully installed a mechanism where sound of bee is amplified whenever elephants
are spotted near railway track to chase them away, thereby saving wild elephants
from being hit by trains. The minister said such mechanism would be considered
for replication elsewhere in the country.
4.POACHERS
NABBED IN KAZIRANGA WITH TIGER SKIN, BONES
NAGAON/GUWAHATI:
Poachers who often target one-horned rhinos from Kaziranga, reportedly as animal
body parts are in huge
demand for their use in traditional medicines and in view of prevailing superstitions,
were also found
targeting tigers after such an incident surfaced late on Friday night in the region.Acting
on a tip off, sleuths of Kaziranga National Park (KNP) including Bagori Range
forest officials. Kohora and Jakhalabandha Police jointly launched an operation and arrested seven poachers
for their alleged involvement in killing a Royal Bengal tiger and recovered a huge quantity of tiger skin and
bones from inside the Kohora range of KNP.
Kaziranga
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Rohini Saikia said, “The tiger was killed in
Anjukpani area in the border area of Nagaon-Karbi Anglong district. We believe that they killed the tiger
about 25 days back and were trying to smuggle it out,” adding “They were produced in the court
and taken in demand by
the department for questioning."
According to
Bhola Bora Officer-in-Charge. Kohora Police Station, the arrested revealed that
they tried to sell the tiger’s body parts to wildlife traffickers. The arrested poachers
were identified as Babu Teron. Joy sing Bey, Dharam Singh Bey. Barlong Teron, Balbir Singh, Dilip Singh and
Manjit Singh.On the
other hand, Deben Bora,
Officer-in-Charge. Jakhalabandha
Police Station said,
"We intercepted the
poachers who were coming from Rongmongve of Karbi Anglong in a car."“Five of them were held from the car
who led us to Dilip Singh’s house where rest of the tiger parts was recovered,” added
Bora.The police official
furtherinformed that tiger skin, often used for decorative purposes, and bones
for traditional
medicine has high demand
in some of the Asian countries including China and Vietnam where it is sold for
several lakhs of US dollars. It is estimated that there are only 24 Royal Bengal tigers at Orang Tiger Reserve and approximately 125 tigers are
available in KNP area."There is a well equipped mafia behind the smuggling of precious animal parts and we
are hopeful that the arrested poachers will surely lead us to something,” he added.
