20 Year College Boy of Assam sends threatening E-mail to Indian Cricket Team.
The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a 20- year-old college student for sending a terror email to the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) official account on August 16, stating that the Indian cricket team which is currently in the middle of the tour of West Indies — is under threat of imminent attack. The PCB had forwarded the mail to the International Cricket Council (ICC). In due process, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also received the email.
The arrested accused, Braja Mohan Das, in his email threatened to kill the Indian cricket players. The ATS is investigating the motive behind the terror email. Das, a resident of Morigaon district in Assam, was picked up by the ATS on August 20 and produced before an Assam court. He was brought to Mumbai on a transit remand. The ATS produced him before the Sewri court, which has sent him to police custody till August 26.
On August 17, the BCCI apprised the Union Home Ministry about the email and contacted the Indian embassy in Antigua, where the Indian team is currently stationed to play a Test. The ministry then contacted the office of the Director General of Police (DGP) in Maharashtra about the email.
As the matter was sensitive, the investigation was handed over to the state ATS. “We are trying to find out the motive behind this. Interrogation is on,” said Deven Bharti, additional director-general of police, ATS. Das had sent the email from a mobile phone. Police said they were interrogating Das, who is studying science, to find out the reasons for sending the email.
Contents of the email were not disclosed and were termed as sensitive in nature. The cyber unit of ATS, which worked on the case, collected call data records and traced the location of the caller to Shantipur in Assam, where the accused lives in a joint family.
Asked if the accused had any cricketing background, a police officer said they were gathering details. Das has been booked for criminal intimidation and criminal intimidation by anonymous communication. Certain electronic equipment used in the crime have been seized. It will now be sent for cyber analysis.
