Mission mangal review
Mission mangal opens up the idea with the story of a space mission to Mars pelled predominantly for female energy. The film is a frictionised account of Mangalyaan- The ISRO mars program that was launched in the year 2013 & which features headline for the scientists, most of them women behind the ambitious project. It was a moment of pride. India was the 1st country to crack the mars mission in its first attempt with a budget of 450 crore rupees approx a fraction of the cost of other international space missions.
Misson mangal is a block baster cleshe held by 1st time diractor Jagan Shakti . Mission mangal is helped along with the star power of Akshay Kumar but it is elevated by smart film making & a clutch of winning performances led by excellent Vidya Balan.
This is a movie about space, scientists, facts & physics but there is no dept of emotions. There are also genuine moments where you laugh & when your heart sours. Despite the formulate arch the makers deliver an entertaining account of a complicated mission. Akshay plays Rakesh Dhawan , who heads the mission. Rakesh is a scientist who has dedicated his life to ISRO , with no time for destructions like love or family. After a failed mission his is demoted to a mars program in the hope that he will take the hint & quit. Akshay's character is the leader but the brains belong to Tara shindey played by Vidya who comes up with the idea of chasing up Mars dream the low cost to rocket & satellite.
Cleaverly but also simplistically the film is accessible & frequently eye rolling theories & concepts to explain the science to lay audience. And because Desi films must have a Videsi Villain we get NASA returned Rupat Desi played by Dilip tahil who assigns a bunch of juniors with the mars program unwilling to waste his best man for an impossible project. Sonaksi Sinha , Tapsi Pannu, Kriti kulhari, Nithya Menen, Sanman Joshi & H.G Dattatreya make up the rest of the team each bringing their respective back story.
Vidya is the best character of the lot. She is a wife & mother juggling domestic responsibilities with her consuming passion for science.
At the end we see Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulating for the successful Misson in year 2014.
Last but not the least the box office collection at the end of day 1 was Rs. 29.16 crore. It has collected Rs 46:44 crore as if now.
