BJP’s Barak coordination Committee to meet Amit Shah on NRC anomalies

Silchar, Sept 07 [Correspondent]: The Barak Valley Coordination Committee of the BJP has decided to approach Union Home Minister Amit Shah with their charter of demands on the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Former Union Minister and now chairman of the coordination committee, Kabindra Purakayastha on Saturday informed media persons that a representative team of the committee members including Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy and other frontline leaders shall meet Amit Shah when the latter arrives at Guwahati on September 8 and submit a charter of demands including a relook into the anomalies in the published NRC and also a plea to get the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) passed in the next Parliament session.

“The NRC which is in front of us is not what we wanted. The NRC is a major blow to those who sought refuge in the country being victims of persecution from erstwhile East Pakistan. It is full of errors mainly due to the autocratic approach of State Coordinator Hajela who had given no heed to the guidelines of the Supreme Court. While many genuine Indians, mainly Bengali- speaking Hindus have been kept out of the NRC, we saw that bulk of the population in bordering districts of Dhubri and Goalpara were included. We shall approach the Union Home Minister with a demand to relook into the messed-up matter and also urge him to look into the possible areas of the CAB and implementation of the notification of September 7, 2015 which is materialised in the rest of the States. We are sure that the Bill shall be tabled again and passed again,” Purakayastha maintained.

He added that the representative team would also press for inclusion of people from Bengali, Hindi and even Manipuri-speaking people in the committee deciding the procedures of Clause 6.

He informed that the committee has decided in the special meeting held at the BJP office here that steps would be taken to provide free legal assistance to the NRC left-outs.
