The 12-hour Assam Bandh called by Rastriya Bajrang Dal evokes mixed response in Barak Valley areas of the state.However, in Gauripur and Gossaigoan bandh evoked Full response All government, semi-government offices including banks, post offices, LICI, business establishments were completely closed.

Silchar [Correspondent] : The 12-hour Assam Bandh called by Rastriya Bajrang Dal evokes mixed response in Barak Valley areas of the state. The Hindu outfit called the bandh demanding scrapping of the final NRC which was published on August 31.

Reports said, traffic was off the road in all three districts including cachar, karimganj & Hilakandi. Shops & business establishments also Did not open their shutters except few in parts of silchar. Attendance in the school was thin. Some of the private schools abstained from running during the day. Although govt offices were open, few employees joined their duty. However, train & air services to & from silchar was normal.

Protests were staged at several places across the valley during the day. Effigies of state NRC co-ordinator Prateek Hajela were burnt & slogans raised to protest against the alleged exclusion of names from the list despite providing documents proving third indigeneity.

Sources also informed that several bandh supporters were arrested from upper part of the state.  A senior police official said that the bandh passed off peacefully & there is no report of any untoward incident came in from any part of the valley. No one was arrested, he said.

However, in Gauripur and Gossaigoan bandh evoked Full response All government, semi-government offices including banks, post offices, LICI, business establishments were completely closed. The NH 31(C) was also free from much vehicular traffic. No untoward incident was reported.
