Silchar: Pijush Hazarika, minister of urban development laid the foundation stone of multiplex amusement park, hotel and market at Gandhi Bagh here on Thursday. Following the laying of the foundation stone the minister at Gandhi Bhawan auditorium said that both BJP and himself possess a progressive mindset and want to scale new heights.
"There re is no point in protesting. If needed, we can sit and discuss. Opposition party is opposing development of Silchar. The park will generate employment opportunities and also a place for people to relax. Not a single tree will be cut. BJP believes in development and has put all thrust on it." said Pijush Hazarika.
Silchar MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy said. " There are many who believe that the only open and green space in the heart of this town, Gandhi Bagh, would lose all its greenery. Gandhi Bagh is definitely the lung of the town. But look at its condition now. Illogical protests and baseless arguments are not acceptable. If needed, we can sit over it. Out of 64 trees in the park. 19 have already died. We can assure you that not a single tree will be harmed. Replantation will be needed for 4 to 5 trees. Trees will not be cut down. We also have plans to extend and beautify the sap lana (snake drain). Carelessness and utter negligence have
almost damaged it. We will extend it and turn it into a beautiful canal which can be used for boating. We are also thinking about the minarets of 11 language martyrs at Gandhi Bagh."
Deputy Speaker and MI.A Aminul Haque Iaskar,
former union minister Kabindra Purkayastha and Silchar Municipal Board Niharandra Narayan Thakur hailed the day as a historic one. They said that BJP government wants growth and development. The programme was compered by Dehashish Shome.
Earlier the district Congress committee led by former MP Sushmiia Dev blocked the road which connects Shillongpatty to Tarapur through Park Road. They raised slogans against the ruling government in general and Niharendra Narayan Thakur in particular. They also accused the Board
of being a broker. The proposal, floated by the BJP led municipal board a couple of years ago has been at the receiving end from a section of civil society and various cultural organisations. District Congress committee joined the fray and protested against it.
